E-Mail

The EIU student e-mail system, known as PantherMail, is the official communications channel for all academic and university notices.

Activating Your E-mail Account

In order to use your student e-mail, access your personal web page, or use your dial-up access, you must first activate your account. The entire activation procedure can be done on-line in a few minutes. If you follow all the steps, you will be able to reset your own password in the future. To activate your account:
  1. Using any computer with a network connection, go to the PAWS homepage, http://www.eiu.edu/paws
  2. Click the Access PAWS System link on the upper left.
  3. A screen asking for your Social Security number and PIN [obtained from the Registration office] will appear. Fill in this information and click the Submit button.
  4. You will be taken to the PAWS main menu screen. Click the Student Passwords & Keys button on the upper right.
  5. The PAWS message screen will appear. This will show your E-mail account Name, E-mail account password.
  6. Note this name and password.
You will now be able to log-in to your e-mail account as well as change your e-mail password.

Securing Your E-mail Password

Once you have activated your e-mail account, you may want to access P-Synch, EIU's password management system, which will allow you to reset your password through the interface.
  1. Visit http://www.ezreset.eiu.edu
  2. Select English
  3. Under My login ID on, choose PEN Student Systems (E-Mail)
  4. Enter your EIU e-mail user id in the space provided
  5. Press the Login button
  6. Choose Use a password
  7. Enter your e-mail password in the space provided
  8. Press the Verify Password button
  9. Click the Answer personal questions

  10. You will be presented with a form what will allow you to input questions and their corresponding answers. When you choose to reset your password later, you will be presented with these same questions and you will be required to provide the answers to them in order for your password to be successfully reset

Accessing Your E-mail Account

You can access your PantherMail either through an e-mail program on your computer or through our Webmail interface. If you choose to access your PantherMail through a program on your computer, you may not be able to take advantage of all of the e-mail features that the Webmail interface offers.

E-mail software

There are many different e-mail programs that you can use with the EIU e-mail system. When setting up your e-mail program, you may be required to enter some of the information listed below.
User Name/LoginUsually a combination of your first initial, middle initial and last name. You can determine your login by searching for your name in the EIU on-line phone book at: http://www.eiu.edu/cgi-bin/search.
POP server addressmail.pen.eiu.edu
IMAP server addressmail.pen.eiu.edu
SMTP (outgoing mail) server addresssmtp.eiu.edu

Webmail

The easiest way to view your PantherMail is via the secure web interface located at http://www.eiu.edu/panthermail. All you need is a computer with an internet connection and a web browser. No configuration is necessary. Simply enter your userid and password in the spaces provided in order to get started.

The PantherMail web interface is powered by Zimbra, which allows you to take advantage of a large number of extra features on top of your e-mail, such as:

Inbox Features: Within your Inbox, you can group mail by custom tags, by conversation, or by the time it was recieved. You can also save frequently used search paramaters for use within your mail folders.

Contacts: Your address book is available for you to use from anywhere that has internet browsing capabilities.

Calendar: You can keep track of schedules and appointments and share your free/busy information with other members of the EIU community.


Instant Messaging: When your contacts within the EIU community are on-line, you can chat with them via the i.m. interface.

Zimlets: A number of custom applications are available for your use, such as Amazon.com searches, Yahoo Maps integration, Evites and SMS messaging.

Forwarding Your E-Mails To Another Account

Should you wish to set up your PantherMail account so that all incoming mail is automatically sent to another account of your choosing (Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.), you can do so through the PantherMail web interface.
  1. Logon to the PantherMail web interface at http://www.eiu.edu/panthermail.
  2. Click the Options button on the left-hand toolbar
  3. Scroll down to the Address to forward mail to field and enter the e-mail address you wish to send all of your PantherMail to.
  4. If you wish to also keep a copy of your PantherMail in your PantherMail inbox, be sure that you do NOT check the box marked Don't keep a local copy of messages. Otherwise, your PantherMail will bypass your EIU e-mail address and will go directly to the e-mail address of your choosing.

Resetting Your E-Mail Password

If you forget your e-mail password, you can use P-Synch, EIU's password management system to reset it.
  1. Visit http://www.ezreset.eiu.edu
  2. Select English
  3. Under My login ID on, choose PEN Student Systems (E-Mail)
  4. Enter your EIU e-mail user id in the space provided
  5. Press the Login button
  6. Choose Answer personal questions
  7. You will then be prompted to provide answers to the personal questions that you have previously provided.
  8. After you provide the correct answers to your questions, you will have the opportunity to enter a new e-mail password
